You haven’t played Destiny 2’s Crucible. Trust me, you guys are blessed compared to that system.
SBMM has become a semi-controversial topic in multiplayer games, and in Destiny specifically its knock-on consequences have included longer waits for matches and some real laggy laggers lagging up the place. Trials Of Osiris was always based on the number of wins on your ticket instead, and will remain so. Crucible matches do sometimes suffer with real laggy players from a continent away warping all over; less of that is good.
And the waits could be long, no doubt. The idea of removing skill as a factor in matchmaking is more contentious. If skill-based matchmaking is working well, every match will always be a challenge for everyone. Throwing together players of all skills does mean sometimes, yeah, great players might just dunk on the whole server.
Skill Based Matchmaking

Why do people think, “Oh, we lost 1 round, I’d better just leave and get banned from comp for 15 minutes,” like it is so stupid. The only way to do better in a game is to actually play the game, not quit at the sign of trouble. All quiting does is make you a worse player and it hurts your teammates’ ability to actually win. Bungie really needs to do something to fix matchmaking. This was one of the really nice matches me and my friend got.
On a side note, who else despises the skip and suppression grenade spam in the crucible.
The big Destiny 2 news this week was the launch of Season of Arrivals and the reveal of the next expansion, Beyond Light. And the insta-kill grenade launcher , I suppose. But big things are happening in the Crucible, too. Bungie said the change was made in response to community feedback, and should shorten queue times, improve connection quality in matches, and will also “play into the strengths of Crucible being a bombastic, frenetic action game,” where the priority is having fun rather than winning at all costs. Trials of Osiris matchmaking will continue to be based on the number of wins on your Passages, Bungie said.
We want the rest of the Crucible to be less of a high-stakes environment where players can have a more relaxed experience and just enjoy the Destiny multiplayer sandbox.
